There are many EPIRBS around today but usually can’t work at there best because the aerial isn’t positioned correctly.
The new SCOUT from SECUMAR offers a whole new approach to ‘man-overboard’.
The lifejacket is in the 275N class with a 60g CO2
cylinder and nearly 300 Newtons of lift, supplied in part by an extra third dimension in the swim bladder that turns the casualty over onto its back faster even with heavy clothing (essential if unconscious) and holds the EPIRB high out of the water.
As with all SECUMAR lifejackets at this level, it comes equipped as standard with a fitted sprayhood, ‘Green for Go’ single indicator and window, proper 2-button ‘click’ buckle and an integrated safety harness. The integral Rhotheta EPIRB works on 121.5MHz with an output of 2W.
However it is the way the EPIRB is held clear of the water and the positioning of the aerial that makes it so effective, holding it up to 30cm high and in a vertical position.
To complete the rescue package, the system can be used with an on-board receiver and direction tracker, so that as soon as there is a casualty, the position can be tracked back as quickly as possible.
This system is currently being used by many professional institutions such as the German Rescue Service, DGzRS and the Dutch Sea Pilots.
