The company Bernhardt Apparatebau GmbH and Co. presents two new life jackets for professional shipping: on the one hand the SECUMAR HSC 150 SOLAS, which has been specially designed for equipping passenger ships which only have a limited amount of space; on the other hand the SECUMAR Victor Offshore 275, the optimum life jacket for wearers of the heaviest type of immersion suits. On modern passenger ships, particularly on the ever more present fast catamarans, there is a limited amount of space. As a contrast to ships of the usual design where passengers have the possibility of strolling around on deck, on high-speed catamarans, passengers are normally seated as one would be in an aeroplane. A further consequence of the lack of space: the required individual safety equipment has to be compact in order to be easily stowed. Bulky foam life jackets are less suitable here.
The SECUMAR HSC 150 SOLAS life jacket solves this problem. This life jacket with SOLAS approval has a patented method of folding, and is thus particularly small in its sealed packaging. Stowing it under the seats is not a problem. The life jacket complies with Euronorm 396 and belongs to the 150 Newton buoyancy category, carrying the "Steering Wheel" as CE mark. SECUMAR Ferry has two buoyancy chambers, each with 165 N buoyancy. When in operation, they are filled with carbon dioxide from cartridges in the inflation device, SECUMATIC 3001 S. However, the cartridge can also be triggered manually; furthermore, the buoyancy chambers may be inflated using the mouth piece. In addition, the SECUMAR Ferry" is equipped with a life jacket light and crotch straps.
SECUMAR's technical designers fulfilled quite special requirements when they came up with the design for the SECUMAR Victor Offshore 275. They had to construct the life jacket in such as way so as to reliably turn wearers of foul-weather clothing and immersion suits into the face-up backwards inclined position; in fact, even when the distribution of buoyancy in the clothing they were wearing was working against the buoyancy in the life jacket. The speciality of this life jacket is that even if the man overboard is lying face towards water, the life jacket is able to keep that person's head out of the water, that is even when he is in such a position in the water where he would normally drown. These high pre-requisites were made by the Dutch police. Hence, within a development period of six months, a life jacket with the extremely high buoyancy volume of 300 N arose, and thus, although it exceeds the requirements of the Euronorm 399, it is still classified under the 275 N category.
Despite this, the life jacket is of flat design and offers freedom of movement to a large extent, the closure is at the side. The buoyancy chamber is closed at the front and provides excellent protection from water washing over it. The fully automatic inflatable life jacket with dual chamber system fulfils SOLAS criteria and carries the "Steering Wheel" as CE mark. It may be put into operation in all areas of professional shipping.
In the meantime, the company Bernhardt Apparatebau GmbH u. Co from Wedel has stood for more than 40 years for innovative products for professional and recreational shipping. Constant research and the highest demands on quality have helped Bernhardt Apparatebau attain a leading position in their field worldwide.
